Teiko Shimazaki Applebaum
Born in Tokyo. Painter and writer. Immediately after the war, she worked as a technical illustrator for airplanes at a technical research institute, and in 1962 she went to the United States to study. She graduated from the Cornish School of Allied Arts on a scholarship. She worked as an artist at an advertising agency and got married there. She then stayed in Europe twice, for one year each, to follow her husband's research, who is a professor of French and German. In 2002, she published "Letters," a book that tells the story of half her life through letters and memories, and won the International Prize at the 9th My Story/Autobiography Grand Prize sponsored by the Japan Autobiography Society. "America and Me" was selected as the best essay collection of 2011 by Bungeishunju. She currently lives in Seattle, Washington.
