マイ・タナカは、ロサンゼルス出身の４世の日系アメリカ人。戦時中、マイの家族は強制収容されていたこともあり、マイは若い頃から政治や文化、アクティビズムへ興味を持っていた。政治科学を専門とする国際研究と日本学の学位を取得。研究のため海外へ滞在していたこともある。
