戯曲「賭博場」で扱った衝撃のテーマ
私がキクムラを知ったのは、1985年2月8日、当時、ロサンゼルスのサンタモニカ通りにあった EWP（現在はリトル・トウキョウにある）でのことだった。この頃、ロサンゼルスに住んでいた私はEWPの作品は欠かさず観にいっていた。この日、彼女が書いた戯曲、「The Gambling Den (賭博場)」という作品が上演された。アメリカ日系人社会における被差別部落の問題を取り扱った芝居で、私は椅子からすべり落ちるほど強い衝撃に襲われた。アメリカで日本の被差別部落のことを考えさせられるとは思ってもみなかったし、日系社会にそのような差別があることを知らなかったからである。それも演劇という媒体を通して、というのがショッキングだった。
