生活状況
We lived in tents, dirt floor, sometimes we had wood floors, oil burning pot belly stove, canvas cot. Mosquito netting in summer. Generator lights at times then candles for reading. Communal showers. Hot food a lot of times, when things got bad, we had C or K rations. Entertainment once in a while. Saw Horace Heidt Show, some USO shows and saw Marilyn Monroe when she honeymooned with Joe DiMaggio. Our first Sgt. escorted her to show.
軍隊生活で最も記憶に残っている出来事
The first time under fire, I said Our Fathers and Hail Mary numerous times and I became a Born Again Catholic and went to Mass. Later on, I served as altar boy once or twice in the field. One funny event - We had a group that sang together a lot. About 8 of us including our black C.O.. Our C.O. made us try out for a show in Seoul. We traveled about 2 hours and when we got there, a group of black G..I.'s were rehearsing. They were so good, they sounded like pros. We (our group) looked at them, then at each other, and quietly got back on the truck without even trying out.
軍隊にいる間、最も懐かしかったもの
The civilian life, my fiancee Carol who later became my wife, and good old Mexican and Japanese food.
個人的に軍隊経験から学んだ最も重要なこと
I learned a lot about human beings, the good, the bad, I learned that being scared is nothing to be ashamed of. War is a waste of men and materials. When we shoot we shoot at sectors and we didn't know if we were effective or not. I have a lot of respect for those who were in the first part of the War (1950-51) they had it rough.
