移民が米国で生きていくとき、祖国から携えてきた文化が大きな心の支えとなることが往々にしてあります。第二次大戦中に強制収容された日本人の中に俳句を始めた人が少なくなかったのですが、それは、強制収容という状況を乗り切るための力を、俳句に求めたためでした。その傾向は戦後もしばらく続きました。
一部の人には「未知なる場所」
南カリフォルニア在住の日本人や日系人にとって、日常的に買い物や食事をする場所として一番に思い浮かぶ場所はどこだろう。トヨタやホンダの北米本社があるトーランスは、日系人よりも新一世など日本生まれの人が利用するイメージがあり、高級住宅地のパロスバーデスには日本からの駐在員が居を構えることが多いが、地域内の日系の店舗やレストランは数えるほどだ。

サンパウロ州境のカンバラからはじまった日系移民の北パラナへの入植は、同地方の開発とともに1930年代に広がりを見せ、日系教育もそれにしたがって拡大していった。ブラジル日系教育の統括機関であるサンパウロ日本人学校父兄会が1936年にブラジル日本人教育普及会改組され、会長に元外交官の古谷重綱が就任した。この普及会は、ブラジル国内に第1から第6支部を創設したが、第3支部に北パラナのカンバラ区、ロンドリーナ区、トレス・バラス区が入っている（ブラジル日本人教育普及會, 1937, p.47）。
