Living conditions
Fair as a combat area. In tents at Division HQs and in wooden bunker at regiment. Extremely cold in the winter.
Most vivid memory of military experience
K.P. (kitchen police). During the medic training classes in hot summer (no air conditioning) in San Antonio, I could not stay awake due to heat and the subjects which I could not understand because of medical terms. After the class, to K.P.
Missed most whilst in the military
Schooling. I am Kibei. When I came back from Japan at the end of summer 1949, I was anxious to go to school for higher education which was denied to me due to war conditions (during and after) in Japan. Only 18 months back in the U.S. I was drafted. I thought to my self, no school for another 2 more years.
Most important thing, personally, to come from military experience?
How to live with fellow soldiers in barracks and crowded tents for long periods of time, and to endure extremely hot and cold climates.
