Bronze Star
Silver Star - According to his July 1944 Silver Star commendation, he "led a party of our troops from a cove in which six Japanese civilians had been taken into custody." He rescued the civilians from a ledge inside a cave where they had been trapped and swam across water "with strong undertow due to a backwash of waves which smashed against its entrance from the ocean." He left the cave briefly to open fire on Japanese soldiers, killing three, "providing his party with screening fire until it could emerge therefrom."
