Living conditions
As an infantryman, my quarters was a pup tent, mess hall in the open (food was okay, good cooks). As an intellegiance officer, I had my personal tent with a jeep driver who was also my orderly. In Tokyo, I had a hotel room - meals in the officers mess.
Most vivid memory of military experience
In So. France, my platoon sargent said, 'You may be fearful the first moments of combat - but the Jerries are 10 times fearful. We've got the support, they're hungry and without ammo, etc. They're fighting for life - so be cool. Don't be a hero, unless you know it's a matter of life or death.'
Missed most whilst in the military
Family
Most important thing, personally, to come from military experience?
I was reminded often of my father's admonition - 'People are depending on you. Carryout your job to the best of your ability.' Hard work paid off - I was selected from about 100 non-coms for a direct commission to 2nd Lt in Tokyo. I want my sons and daughters to be dependable and to work diligently. Others are depending on their efforts and ultimate success.
Additional information
Keeping physically fit was second to being spiritually and emotionally strong. One's integrity seems to be measured by what he is - not only what he looks like and much less on what he says.
