“The stairway is a place that you go up to pray, so it is kind of like a church. It gives a sense of peace and quietness. It is spiritual, it’s a mystery. The light comes from the top. I was trying to get the overall feeling about the thing. After I finished, I got much more satisfaction. The viewer takes in the whole painting and finds his own spirituality.”
