Background Information

グループの方針

To support taiko in New York City and the region. To provide a location where people could study taiko in workshops with instructors from different locations with different taiko styles, but to provide regular, affordable taiko classes to the community for people who could not become professional taiko drummers.

The taiko society has recitals at the University periodically during the year. Their are open houses to introduce new people to the classes.

Group History
Describe how, where, and why the ensemble was founded. What was its inspiration?

The workshops were established to provide a place where people could study taiko.

構成メンバー
(i.e. ethnicity, generation, average years of experience, musical backgrounds, and motivation for playing)

Membership consists of students in classes on Saturdays and
Sundays. Parents and children from age 6.

Description of the group's community - regional, ethnic, social, etc.

Open weekends to the community.

パフォーマンス、レコーディング、発売作品

パフォーマンス
List a selection of your regular performance venues (for example, Denver Sakura Matsuri, Seabrook obon, business conventions, Manzanar Pilgrimage, Maui Marathon, etc.)

Workshop open house, Fall each year. Other small demonstrations by invitation.

講師
List the instructors, teachers and mentors who have worked with the ensemble.

Hiro Kurashima teaches regularly on Saturdays. Janet Youngblood teaches regularly on Sundays/Tuesdays. We have arranged workshops with taiko groups from Japan (Cohan) we have collaborated with the Columbia U. theater department, we continue to organize performances by Japanese taiko groups (Tennon daiko, Cohan) and bring other Japanese performance to the University (Samurai sword theater.)
