Living conditions

Slept in barracks with community showers.
We had rice three times a day. Japanese food and local food in mess hall.
1399th was called chow hounds (nick name).
Card games and table tennis for entertainment.

Most vivid memory of military experience

I was transferred from the 1399th to the 8th Army Occupation Force in Yokohama, Japan, leaving the island (Hawaii) for the first time.
On weekends I visited some resort towns. Tokyo, Nikko, Kamakura, Hakone, Mt. Fujiyama and many more cities.

I came out a more matured person. I did learn a lot in a short time in the Army. Discipline, responsibility and independence.
