Mai Tanaka é uma Yonsei nascida e criada em Los Angeles. A história familiar de encarceramento de Mai durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial despertou seu interesse precoce na intersecção entre política, cultura e ativismo. Mai possui bacharelado em Estudos Internacionais com foco em Ciência Política e Estudos Japoneses e passou um tempo no exterior pesquisando e estudando no Japão.
