Henry Sugimoto, "Goodbye Mary"

This painting shows a Japanese American woman, presumably Mary, waving goodbye to a woman who seems to be her neighbor, as she and her children are relocated. This picture represents the lives and friendships that the Issei and Nisei had before they were rushed off to the camps. Sugimoto painted this during his stay at the camp in Jerome, and it shows, once again, his shift from landscape focused art to human focused art.
