鮫島等、1929年の家族写真

父、長三郎（1877年鹿児島県出身）は、1897年にワシントン州での鉄道工事の作業員として渡米。 1910年にロサンゼルス北東のパサデナ市で小さなクリーニング店を始めた。 母、つな（1894年鹿児島県出身）は、1912年に嫁ぎ二男二女をもうけた。 やがて鮫島のクリーニング店には大型の洗濯機やプレス機もそろったが、1913年に成立していた外国人土地規制法により、店舗をかねた自宅はリースだった。 「もったいない…、」，「日本人として恥ずかしいことやみっともないことをしてはいけない。」というのが母の口癖で、家の中では我慢，忍耐，義理，義務といった日本的な価値観が尊ばれた。 兄弟は土曜日の日本語学校に通わされ、「朕惟フニ我カ皇祖皇宗國ヲ肇ムルコト宏遠ニ…」と、教育勅語を暗唱させられた。教育勅語は、前後60年以上の今でも諳んじている。 父親は「米国人と対等にやっていくには学問をしなければだめだ。」と、子供たちがアルバイトした小遣いも学資のための債権購入に当てた。
