Mrs. Yoshiko Inose talks about her experiences with the pre-WWII Japanese hospitals in Los Angeles. Introduction by Gwenn Jenson, Ph.D. Mrs. Yoshiko Inose (nee Shibuya) was born in Los Angeles, California in 1908. Her father, Seijiro Shibuya, was one of the first publishers of The Rafu Shimpo, later sold to Toyasaku Komai. In the early 1930s, Yoshiko married Seijiro Inose, the adopted son of Inosuke Inose. Yoshikos father-in-law Inosuke was the president of the first Japanese Hospital, near Little Tokyo called Nanka Nihon Byoin or Southern California Japanese Hospital, located on Amelia and Turner Streets. It was a hotel converted into a hospital in response to the Nikkei community's need during the influenza epidemic of 1918. They lived next door to the hospital, and is where her first son Ken was born.
