Dr. Sakaye Shigekawa explains the reason Issei doctors built Japanese Hospitals, with introduction by Gwenn Jenson, Ph.D. Dr. Sakaye Shigekawa was born in 1913 and attended school in the Los Angeles area. After graduating from Jefferson High School she completed her pre-medical education at USC in 1936. She then attended Loyola Medical School in Chicago, Illinois. She was training as a resident in General Medicine at L.A. County General Hospital in 1941 in Los Angeles upon the outbreak of Word War II. During the war, she practiced medicine in Chicago. After the war she returned to Los Angeles to start a private practice. The video clip was prepared for the Discover Nikkei program, "Japanese Hospital: Caring for the Pre-war Nikkei Community" at the Japanese American National Museum, Tateuchi Democracy Forum on Saturday, April 11, 2010.
