Camp Tanoshii is a week-long summer day camp created for elementary school students between the ages of six and nine. It is located at the Japanese Cultural Institute in Gardena, California. The camp is designed to teach campers about the Japanese American community and culture through a series of fun workshops and assignments.

TaikoFirst thing on Monday morning the campers were sumerged into Japanese culture with Taiko drums. Reverend Tom Kurai of the JCI Taiko and Taiko Center of Los Angeles taught the children a fun lesson in Taiko.

KendoAnother hands-on workshop that the children enjoyed was Kendo. Kendo teachers from the JCI gave the children a crash course in sword fighting.

Ray ShibataRay Shibata is the Director and Principal of the Camp Tanoshii. Without his direction and support, Camp Tanoshii could not be possible. He has spent many hours pouring all of his efforts into the Camp to ensure that the campers get the most out of their week.

Field TripOne of the fun activities that the Children participated in was a field trip to the California State University, Long Beach Japanese garden. The campers and councilors had a great time touring the garden's zen garden, Koi pond, and tea house.

VolunteersVolunteers are an essential part of Camp Tanoshii. These volunteers assisted Ray Shibata in various activities and also got snacks ready for the children throughout the week.

Closing CeremonyOn the last day of the camp, parents and grandparents were invited to watch the children sing Japanese songs while Maya Kochiyama accompanied them on guitar. Afterward the campers and their parents enjoyed delicious food for lunch as part of the closing ceremonies. |
