Tuning and preparation for band competition
A full hour before the band marches into the competition circle is devoted purely to tuning and warming up the pipes. Since they are made of an extremely dense wood and operate by double-reeds, they are sensitive to moisture, heat, cold, and humidity. Warming them up as a band early ensures that all the pipes are consistent and have all been played the same amount.
I'm pictured here being electronically tuned before our band heads off to compete.
