Hapa Japanese American History

Since the grand opening in March 2016, the curators at the Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMsj) have been continually refreshing and evolving this exhibit. Even if you have seen the exhibit before, please visit again and see the many changes that have occurred. If you have not had the opportunity to do so yet, know that the exhibit will be up until the end of December.

In Visible & Invisible: A Hapa Japanese American History, we explore a version of Japanese American history that highlights the presence and the experiences of mixed race/ethnic families and individuals, from the earliest pioneers (the first Nisei were mixed race) to the present day community (by 2020 the majority of Japanese Americans will be multiracial/multiethnic). Through photos, historical artifacts, and multimedia images, this exhibit explores the diverse and complex history of the mixed-race and mixed-roots Japanese American experience, both locally and beyond.

Curated by Cindy Nakashima and Fred Liang, with extensive photo participation from San Jose area families, come and learn more about the dynamic and diverse nature of Japanese America in this exciting exhibit!
Cost: Free with admission to the museum (nonmembers, $5; students and seniors over age 65, $3; JAMsj members and children 5 and under , free).
