How to be a successful gardener

I had a good gardening business going before we moved to England. They used to call me the “Gardener of the Stars.” I used to work with Rod Stewart, Sylvester Stallone, Angie Dickinson, Ann Margaret, which I still work for. I forget the other names of these other stars, but Harry Neilson, the singer…I had a good rapport with them because if you treat your client honestly and tell them what you’re doing, and tell them what it’s going to cost, they will trust you.

But yet again, is to be a good gardener. Learn what they like. Learn the colors they like. If you don’t get that down right, you’re in trouble because they’re going to say to you, “Well what’s this? What’s this on the bill?” I’ve never had to explain it. Because I’ve always explained it to them before I did anything. And just be honest. Don’t try to make a million dollars in one day. It takes years. So I would say being a gardener, you have to be very honest.

Lou Kitashima é um jardineiro sansei de Los Angeles. Quando criança, ele e sua família foram encarcerados no campo de concentração de Gila River no Arizona durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Após a guerra, sua família retornou para Los Angeles onde seu pai era jardineiro. Quando jovem, ele ficou estacionado na Inglaterra junto com o Comando Aéreo Estratégico da aeronáutica. Durante sua estada na Inglaterra, ele conheceu e se casou com uma inglesa. Após o término do seu serviço militar, ele voltou para os E.U.A. com sua esposa, com quem teve três filhos.

No seu retorno, ele ingressou na profissão de jardineiro e acabou ficando conhecido como o “Jardineiro das Estrelas”, trabalhando para celebridades como Rod Stewart, Sylvester Stallone e Ann-Margret. Mais tarde, ele voltou com sua família para a Inglaterra onde fundou uma empresa de jardinagem. Posteriormente, ele voltou para os E.U.A., mas sua família permaneceu na Inglaterra.

Em Los Angeles, ele deu continuação à sua empresa de jardinagem e passou 17 anos como Chefe Jardineiro da Faculdade de West Los Angeles, até se aposentar em 2003. Para se manter ativo, ele continua a trabalhar para alguns clientes até hoje. (7 de julho de 2007)
