Visit this new exhibition for free\, explore th e museum\, and dance along to a performance by DJ Melo-D of the B eat Junkies.\n\nGlenn Kaino: Aki’s Market</str ong> is inspired by Akira and Sachiye Shiraishi’s small neighborhood ma rket (1957–1970) in East Los Angeles. Created by artist Glenn Akira Kain o (Akira’s grandson and namesake)\, the exhibition explores the transgen erational trauma from the World War II Japanese American incarceration exp erience through the stories of Kaino\, his family\, and the community. It is also an interrogation of the American practice of displacement—collap sing almost 100 years of cultural subjugation into a spiritual\, explorato ry space from which the building blocks of peace might be discovered.\n\nT he exhibition draws from the life of Kaino’s grandfather\, Akira Shirais hi\, a legendary high school football player who was unable to realize his dreams of attending Occidental College when he was incarcerated at the He art Mountain concentration camp in Wyoming. Upon returning to East LA afte r the war\, he and Sachiye dedicated their lives to building their market on the corner of Blanchard Street and Geraghty Avenue—a multicultural an chor that served the Japanese and Hispanic communities.\n\nKaino only knew his grandfather through family stories. To recreate the market\, he pulle d from his artistic toolkit and used his skill of unlocking past memories through layered conversations (as in his work with historical figures like Olympian\, Tommie Smith). He used this methodology to draw out family mem ories and paint a full picture of the place they called “The Store.”\n \nThrough a virtual reality recreation of the store and an installation of a contemporary store with the same name\, Glenn Kaino: Aki’s Marke t is an exhibition about collective memory where the archival bleeds into the imaginary and where the most advanced technology serves the most personal past.\n\nGlenn Kaino: Aki’s Market is supported in part b y the National Endowment for the Arts\, the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs\, and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors thr ough the Department of Arts and Culture\, with special thanks to the Pasad ena Arts Alliance. The exhibition is also supported in part by the VIA Art Fund.\n DTSTAMP:20240510T113939Z SUMMARY:Glenn Kaino: Aki’s Market Opening Celebration URL:/en/events/2023/06/30/glenn-kaino-akis-market-opening-celebration/ END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
