Kokeshi Heads for Tanabata Decorations

In the summer of 2009, the Discover Nikkei team worked with other Japanese American National Museum staff, interns, and volunteers to make seven large fukinagashi decorations for the 1st Annual Los Angeles Tanabata Festival.

Inspired by the Museum's Kokeshi: From Folk Art to Art Toy exhibition, we decided to make two kokeshi doll tanabata kazari. Discover Nikkei Project Coordinator, Yoko Nishimura, made paper-mache globes about 20" in diameter for the heads. Artist Emi Motokawa, designed the faces for these two. Aren't they cute?

Paper flowers folded from tissue paper were later glued to the heads using Emi's design as a template.
