Nippon América 日本アメリカ (Barranquilla Arts Carnival)

Licensing

The Nippon América 日本アメリカ photo exhibition will be coming to the Barranquilla Arts Carnival on February 6-9, 2020.

Nippon América 日本アメリカ takes a look at Japan through the eyes of three Latin American Nikkei photographers: the Brazilian Marcio Takeda, the Peruvian Luis Okamoto and the Mexican Taeko Nomiya and is curated by the Mexican artist Alantl Molina, as a personal homage to Japan.

Marcio Takeda (IG:@takeda_marcio ) does colorful digital street photography that show us the surprises Marcio runs into when he hits the streets with his camera. Luis Okamoto (IG:@luisokamotope ) does Polaroids that focus exclusively in architectural details of ancient temples or archaeological sites. In his pictures, ancient Peru and modern Japan would seem like two faces of the same country. The Mexican Taeko Nomiya (IG:@nomiyataeko ) uses double exposure to combine two shots in a single image, where she shows modern scenes overlaid with characters and images reminiscent of the true spirit of the places she photographs. She is one of the up-and-comers of art photography in Mexico and has been causing quite a stir in recent months.

The pictures were shot in Tokyo in August 2019 when the photographers travelled to the city to explore how the romanticized Japan of their family histories would compare with what they would find during their visit, and the exhibition debuted in Japan in September. The Barranquilla Arts Carnival will be its second stop before its big opening at Mexico City's Museo Nacional de las Culturas del Mundo in the second quarter of 2020.

Nippon América 日本アメリカ can be visited on February 6-9 at the Espace CulturelAlianza Francesa de Barranquilla (Calle 52 No. 54 75) as part of the Barranquilla Arts Carnival
