故郷であるカリフォルニア州エンシニタスへ最近帰郷したエスター・ニューマンは、大学卒業後、オハイオ州クリーブランド・メトロパークス動物園でマーケティングとメディア・プロダクションの職に就く。その後、大学院へ進学し20世紀アメリカ史を学ぶ。大学院在学中に自身の家族史に興味を持ち、強制収容や移民、日系人のホスト社会への同化などといった日系ディアスポラ関係のテーマで独自にリサーチを続けている。
