ロイ・「リロイ」・イトウは、1929 年 9 月 1 日にカリフォルニア州ロサンゼルスで生まれました。1942 年 4 月、彼と家族はカリフォルニア州アルカディアのサンタアニタ集合センターに避難させられ、その後、その年の後半にコロラド州グラナダのアマチ移住センターに移されました。1945 年にロサンゼルスに戻り、高校を卒業し、1951 年に UCLA を卒業し、その後南カリフォルニア大学で行政学の修士号を取得しました。彼は 33 年間、ロサンゼルス郡政府でさまざまな行政職に就き、1987 年に退職しました。彼は数年間、日系アメリカ人国立博物館でボランティアとして働き、さまざまな博物館プロジェクト、特にロサンゼルスの農産物産業における日本人の歴史に関する口述歴史を収集してきました。

Naotaro Ito was born in 1886 as a second son to a rice farming family in Kitsuneji, a tiny rural hamlet in Aiichi Prefecture, near Nagoya, Japan.
