Experience obon\, a summer tradition brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants as they sought to continue their cultural traditions and honor their ancestors.\n\nRev. Gakuo Okabe arrived on the Island of Hawaii in 1894 and after a brief period chose Paauhau t o build the first Japanese Buddhist Temple in Hawaii. A dedication ceremo ny was held in 1897 after the completion of the main building. The presen t Temple was built in 1918. The architecture is that of temples in Japan and although the Temple has undergone renovations over the years\, it sti ll maintains its original appearance.
