With a live presentation during both events, Michio Iwao, a former internee at Gila River, Arizona, will show the process for carving and painting bird pins. A craft learned in the internment camp, Mr. Iwao went back to making bird pins after his retirement.

Come see how these beautiful birds come to life in the hands of a true craftsman!

Continuing Exhibit:
The Art of Gaman:

Arts and Crafts from the Japanese American Internment Camps, 1942-1946

This landmark exhibition showcases arts and crafts made by Japanese Americans in U.S. internment camps during World War II.

These incredibly crafted objects are physical manifestations of the art of gaman, a Japanese word that means to endure the seemingly unbearable with dignity and patience, and a testimony to the unbreakable spirit of this stalwart community.

Programs are free with Museum admission. Reservations recommended; (847) 967-4889.
