祖母は大正２年の生まれで、戦前にはハワイ移民を希望したらしい。幼いころに父親を亡くし、兄２人、姉１人の末っ子だったからだとか、活発で大変進歩的な性格だったからだとか、私は両親や叔母たちと祖母について話すことがよくある。祖母の生家は愛媛県松山市の比較的豊かな家であり、移民をしないでも食べていけるからと周りはみな強く反対したため、結局その野望は果たせぬまま終わったようである。
