[Audio] Hirabayashi, Korematsu, and Yasui: Family Perspectives

In 1983 coram nobis  petitions were filed in federal district courts in Seattle, San Francisco, and Portland on behalf of Gordon Hirabayashi, Fred Korematsu, and Minoru Yasui; these petitions contended that the 1943 and 1944 Supreme Court decisions in their cases had fundamental errors and demonstrated manifest injustice on the part of the U.S. government. Who were the individuals who defied curfew and exclusion orders? Family members on this panel share their insights, remembrances, and perspectives on these three civil rights icons.

Moderators:

  • Lorraine K. Bannai, Professor of Legal Skills and Director, Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality, Seattle University

Panelists:

  • Jay Hirabayashi, Executive Director, Kokoro Dance
  • Karen Korematsu, Co-Founder & Executive Director, Korematsu Institute for Civil Rights and Education
  • Holly Yasui, CEDESA Centro de Desarrollo Agropecuario / Center for Agricultural Development
