Heart Mountain boy scouts

Pictured here from left to right: Jake Ohara, Tak Motoyasu, Eddie Kato

All of whom were members of the Koyasan Boy Scouts Troop 379. The Boy Scouts pictured here are saluting the raising of the American Flag for a service project for Heart Mountain Camp.

One of Bill's greatest disappointments was being too young to join the Maryknoll Boy Scouts before he was evacuated. However, Heart Mountain Relocation Center offered interned children, like Bill, the opportunity to participate in a boy scout troop. His block's boy scout troop was one of 7 that were sponsored by community organizations—Maryknoll School and St. Mary's Episcopal to name a few. The multitude of troops at the camp meant that Heart Mountain had its own Boy Scout council, which hosted events such as field day competitions, some of which included troops from the nearby communities of Cody and Powell.
