Save the date for Hamakua Jodo Mission's 2018 obon festival, a night of food, dancing, and more! Experience obon, a summer tradition brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants as they sought to continue their cultural traditions and honor their ancestors.

Rev. Gakuo Okabe arrived on the Island of Hawaii in 1894 and after a brief period chose Paauhau to build the first Japanese Buddhist Temple in Hawaii. A dedication ceremony was held in 1897 after the completion of the main building. The present Temple was built in 1918. The architecture is that of temples in Japan and although the Temple has undergone renovations over the years, it still maintains its original appearance. Koa wood used for the altar and the original carving by one of the early members of the mission, can still be seen today.

Saturday, 8/11 - 7:00 p.m.; service: 6:00 p.m.
