Members and friends of the Japanese American Service Committee are cordially invited to the JASC on Friday, September 23, at 7:30 pm for an informal conversation with Delphine Hirasuna, author of The Art of Gaman: Arts and Crafts of the Japanese American Internment Camps 1942-1946. Ms. Hirasuna is also guest curator of "The Art ofGaman" exhibition, which opens at the Illinois HolocaustMuseum & Education Center on September 25.

Ms. Hirasuna will address the importance of artistic expression among persons of Japanese descent who were held in government-run "internment camps" during World War II. Using found and recycled materials, these internees crafted objects that served both creative and practical needs.Such historically significant artifacts still may be found in the homes of families in Chicago's Japanese American community today.

"An Evening with Delphine Hirasuna" is open to the public without charge; however, we ask that you reserve your place by contacting Karen (773.275.0097 x222). Light refreshments will be served.

The exhibition based on The Art of Gaman will run fromSeptember 25, 2011, through January 15, 2012, at theIllinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center (9603 Woods Drive, Skokie).
