About

Sup Nima fam,

My name is Gonzalo Kitayama but I was born Eric Kitayama. I legally changed my name in 2013 and since then have not taken time to critically engage the implications of this change concerning my lifelong struggle with identity—the stages of transformation throughout this convoluted journey and the contradictions between self-definition and social perception.

Last month I turned thirty years old. Although these questions of identity are no longer central themes to my development, my feelings of alienation from a coherent identity or membership to identities that I have historically been barred admission to (namely, latinidad and asianness) remain reoccurring themes.

At thirty I’m still laboring to work out the contradictions of my name and my self. Now that I’ve found y’all, I hope I can take this journey with your support.

Peace,
-go
