Nikkei Names: Writing Workshop in Los Angeles

Jasper Ferehawk

My first name, Jasper, was decided for a variety of reasons. First off, a good friend of my parents began working as a park ranger on Jasper Ridge Biological Reserve a couple months before I was born. Secondly, my parents are big fans of the artist Jasper Johns. And lastly, my name has roots in my Armenian Ancestry, meaning “Treasure holder.”

My last name is a combination of my mother and father’s last names, Fereshedian and Hawkinson. While Fereshedian in Armenian means “angels”, Hawkinson was an Americanized form of “son of Hawk” in Swedish.

My middle name (not written above) comes from my Japanese roots:  Hideo. It means beautiful man and was taken from the famous baseball player Hideo Nomo.
