Senator Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii, 2012 Campaign

Licensing

"Dan is working to promote astronomy."

The back of the endorsement card:

In addition to the $1 billion in capital investment on Maul and the Big Island, economic impact amounts to more than $150 million a year.

Through Senator Inouye’s efforts, the National Science Foundation selected Haleakala as the site of the world’s largest solar telescope, and helped secure $300 million for construction. He was also instrumental in the selection of Mauna Kea for the new Thirty Meter Telescope, with a construction cost of $1.2 billion and annual operations of $75 million.

The observatories and related activities provide more than 600 high-paying jobs, not only for astronomers, but for technical, administrative and support services. Astronomy as a high-tech science diversifies the Hawai‘i economy and gives local young people with scientific and technical talents a wealth of opportunities.
