Discover Nikkei Community Collage - March 2009

Licensing

On March 14, 2009, Discover Nikkei invited attendees of the Target Free Family Saturday "Say Cheese!" event at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles to participate in a special activity.

Participants were invited to help create a Discover Nikkei Community Collage by sharing a picture, text, or item and then posting them up themselves. Our own real-time board/wall to share something with our community.

The majority of the participants were young children who enjoyed the opportunity to draw and add their creations to the collage. Their drawings included flowers, pets, Pokemon characters, and pictures they drew of family members. For the adults, we asked them to share their ideas about community. Here are just a small sampling of the fantastic contributions that were posted.

The Horizon

Everyone spent a lot of time working on their contribution to the collage. This pre-teen was one of the many artistic contributors that day.

Kyra Mizuki

This lovely drawing was submitted by a little girl who, after taping it up, ran back to ask if she could write her name in Japanese on it also.

Father/Son portraits

We welcomed everyone to participate in the collage, but it was this father's son who got him to draw something and he ended up really enjoying himself!

Mariele's drawings

All these were from one little 2-year-old girl - who's favorite part of the day was drawing for the Community Collage!

Family drawings

These drawings and haiku poems were created by a family who all were very talented. They were not Nikkei, but were very interested in Japanese culture, particularly anime and manga.

Fun at JANM!

After this mother and her daughters had gone through the National Museum and participated in all of the special family activities, she sat down to reflect on their day with this drawing.
