Check Nikkei—A Self Portrait

I was asked by my friend Ryan Suda to do a painting for a gallery show that he was pulling together in celebration of the 20th anniversary of his business, Blacklava. Artists were asked to create pieces inspired by his t-shirt designs. I chose to do one based on his "Check Nikkei" shirt.

This painting presents various things in my life that contribute to my sense of Nikkei identity in some way.
