The delegation's first destination was San Francisco\, becoming th e first grassroots exchange between America and Japan. The ship's arrival in San Francisco in 1860 was a historic milestone in the 150 year relati onship between the United States and Japan. This voyage signified Japan's desire and resolve to break its policy of isolation and develop relation s with other countries\, as it provided an opportunity for the first offi cial exchange between the peoples of the United States and Japan. Professor Agawa was a practicing attorney for 15 years at Gibson\, Dunn &amp\; Crutcher and Nishimura &amp\; Partners\, T okyo. He then ventured into academia\, where he has been a lecturer and a professor at Doshisha University\, University of Virginia Law School\, a nd Georgetown Law. He also served as the Director of the Japan Informatio n &amp\; Culture Center at the Embassy of Japan in Washington\, D.C. from 2007 to 2009.
