On Sunday, January 30, 2011, the Southern California Kendo Federation will be holding the Kubota Memorial Tournament at the Dee Hardison Sports Center located in Wilson Park of Torrance, 2400 Crenshaw Ave, Torrance, CA 90501.

The tournament, which is held every 3 years, is in memory of Yutaka Kubota Sensei. He was one of the pioneers of Kendo in the United States and also helped establish Kendo in Southern California. Southern California Kendo Federation is one of the largest federations in the United States.

This tournament will feature some of best kendoists in the United States, as well as current and future Team USA members.

Kendo, which means the way of the sword, is one of the lesser known of the martial arts. With recent success of Team USA (2nd place at the last two World Kendo Championships), Kendo is becoming more popular with people of all different cultural backgrounds. Also, Kendo does not have limits as to age, currently having students and instructors ranging from 4 to 89 years old.
