Matsumi "Mike" Kanemitsu
Painter and printmaker (1922-1992)
Born in Utah, Kanemitsu grew up in Japan, then returned to the United States to pursue his career. His circle of friends in New York City in the 1950's included many of the period's most influential artists. His abstractions were influenced by the environment and reflected an attitude enriched by his Japanese heritage. Conscious of the opposing elements in nature, he spoke of achieving a balance and of being "like sunshine, like moon."
