Organizations

  • Visual Communications, the first Asian Pacific American media arts center, founded in 1970, provides a comprehensive program of production, presentation and preservation of Asian Pacific American media art, including a substantial library of Nikkei resources. Located in Los Angeles.
  • Center for Asian American Media, formerly National Asian American Telecommunications Association] (NAATA). A non-profit organization dedicated to presenting stories that convey the richness and diversity of Asian American experiences to the broadest audience possible. They do this by funding, producing, distributing and exhibiting works in film, television and digital media.
  • Asian Cinevision is a non-profit media arts center in New York, founded in 1976, dedicated to production and preservation of Asian American media.

  • San Diego Asian Film Festival presents a diverse schedule of Asian Pacific films and videos from around the country, including many works by Nikkei media artists.
  • Chicago Asian American Film Showcase is an annual film & video festival in the midwest region of the United States that presents work by and about Asians and Asian Pacific Americans.

Written and directed by Willard Motomura as his MFA project at USC's School of Cinema - Television. The story of two Japanese American GI's fighting in France, in 1944, who stumble upon a wounded German soldier. Their argument over the appropriate course of action is informed both by their battlefield experiences and by the discrimination they faced at home.

"Minoru Fukushima was a nine-year-old boy living in Vancouver, Canada when Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor thrust him into a world of racism. He and his family were forced from their home, dispatched to internment camps in the interior of British Columbia and finally deported to Japan. Directed by Michael Fukushima, Minoru's son, the film artfully combines striking animation with archival material. The father's memories, interspersed with the son's voice, weaves a tale of suffering and survival, of a birthright lost and recovered."
This film tells the story of six Japanese women who married Australian servicemen after the Second World War, their efforts to build new lives in Australia, and the challenges they faced in an alien land. (邦題:『八重桜物語-オーストラリアに渡った戦争花嫁たち』)

(財)放送番組国際交流センター(JAMCO)は、1991年の設立以来毎年、国際シンポジウムを実施。「『日本』を越える日本のテレビドラマ:そのトランスナショナルな意味と影響」をテーマに、第13回シンポジウムが開催され、このリンクはその講演と討論について。
JAMCO (Japan Media Communication Center) sponsors the 13th online international symposium. This symposium will examine the ways in which Japanese TV programs, especially dramas, are received overseas and what influence they exert there, as well as what cultural interaction they give rise to between Japan and the local societies of the countries where they are shown.

"Haru to Natsu: todokanakatta tegami (Haru & Natsu: undelivered letters)". The story of two sisters, Haru and Natsu, who meet again in Japan after 70 years when Haru and her father migrate to Brazil. This drama tells 70 years of their life through their memories and letters. It will be broadcast in Fall 2005.

"Sakura" was a NHK morning television drama series, broadcast in 2002. It is a story about a yonsei Hawaii-born American woman who went to a rural area of Japan for one year and taught English at a private middle school.
