Gilbert, the son of two New York Philharmonic violinists, was named to lead the Philharmonic at the conclusion of Lorin Maazel's contract in 2009. Gilbert is currently the chief conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and was until recently the music director of the Santa Fe Opera.
