“Nima” are members of the Discover Nikkei online community. Hailing from all around the world, they each bring unique experiences and perspectives to the site’s rich archive of stories.

Nima Voices is an interview series where we uplift our Nima through brief, but enlightening, interviews. In the 7th episode (and first in Japanese!), guest host Masako Miki, Japanese External Relations Officer at JANM, will be talking with Ryusuke Kawai, a Japanese journalist and writer, who has been sharing articles on Discover Nikkei since 2010.

We’ll ask Ryusuke about his recent series about Sukeji Morikami, the only member of the Yamato Colony who remained in Florida after its dissolution. He later donated his farm to the county, which is now the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. He’ll also talk about his current series about Shinichi Kato, who interviewed Issei in all 50 states, as well as other Nikkei stories.

Please note that this episode will be in Japanese only.

The term “Nima” comes from combining Nikkei and nakama (Japanese for “colleagues”, or “fellows”, or “circle”). Join our Nima-kai community and share your stories about the Nikkei experience! Find out more at DiscoverNikkei.org

We encourage you to subscribe to the Discover Nikkei YouTube channel so you will be notified when the video is streaming live. The program will be also be live-streamed on Facebook.
