私の父は後に帰化して市民権をえる事になりました。その時、本名のハチジロウではアメリカ人らしくないのでホース(人気TVキャラクターの名前)やワキ(床屋時代の常連だったポルトガル人の名前)に名前を変えようかと言いました。馬・イチヤマなんておかしいですが、ウイリアムやヘンリーはもっとおかしいと考えました。でも、結局、アメリカ人である事は名前の問題ではありません。心の問題です。父はアメリカ人として誇りをもって人生を終えました。私もアメリカは素晴らしい国だと思います。日系人の強制収容に対し、きちんと謝罪をしたからです。

 家族の話に戻りましょう。私の妻も義母も当時西海岸に住んでいたので、「敵性外国人」として強制収容所に送られました。日系人であるという理由でアメリカ市民である二世も送られました。1944年に妻の家族はオレゴン州に戻りましたが、日系人への偏見は続いていました。
