1886年に始まった、ハワイへの第一回官約移民農地、約3割が山口県大島郡の人で、以後移民禁止になるまで、大島から多くの日本人が海外へ移住しました。
日本ハワイ移民史料館には、ハワイへの移民の貴重な資料がそろっています。

父は日本からマウイ島に渡りました。そこからパプアノアに移り住み,そこで母と結婚しました。その後,ヒロの町に出てきました。父は大工をしていました。母は商売がしたくて,豆腐屋を始めました。その頃,私が生まれたんです。豆腐屋は朝が早くて大変でした。当時,一丁 5 銭で,日本人相手に売っていたんです。

戦争が続いてもアメリカ本土からはものがなんとか買えたので商売はできました。でも,日本からの品物は入らなくなってきたので,下駄は自分たちで材料を調達して作り,商品にしました。日本の敗戦を知って私は日本が負けたことを知って泣きました。私は日本とアメリカ,どちらにも負けてほしくなかった。私は二世でしょ,でから日本人に近いの。でもアメリカ人。泣いたなんて言っちゃいけないとずっと思ってましたよ。
