次の世代の二世も一世の気持ちを受け継いでアメリカ社会で初めからやりなおすという意識で一生懸命に頑張ってきたのです。いわゆる「服従的な日本人」(Quiet Japanese)とよばれている人々の持っている美徳意識なのです。でも三世になると彼らはアメリカ社会の教育で育ち,罪を犯していないのになぜ日本人たちは公聴会もなく裁判もなく強制収容されたのかという事実を追究していったのです。戦争が終わって再び生きる道を日本に求めたのです戦争はいったん始まれば、やはり「日本人」としてあることを意識せざるを得なくなります。結局のところ髪が黒い限り日本人であると見られるのです。戦争が終わって収容所からで出た日本人の中には,なんとか日本的な要素を取り払ってアメリカ人以上にアメリカ社会にとけ込もうと努力した人々もいました。私の友達も仏教からキリスト教に変わり,日本学校に通わせていた子どもとアメリカの学校に変えたりしたのです。
この写真は、戦争で離れ離れになった家族らが、26年後ロサンゼルスのボイルハイツで再会した時のものです。
