East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center Akimatsuri 2007 Album

The East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center hosts an annual akimatsuri (fall festival) featuring cultural exhibits and performances as well as freshly made food and a swap meet. This album showcases a small sampling of the cultural exhibits and performances.

Kawafuku Restaurant, Los Angeles, CA

This is a collection of images related to the Kawafuku Restaurant in L.A.'s Little Tokyo. The restaurant was opened on Weller Street in 1923 by Takichi and Hana Kato. It later moved to 204 East First Street. Following World War II, Tokijiro Nakajima took over the restaurant. However, the Kato's son Mitsuo, known as Jack, opened another restaurant in Little Tokyo with his wife Masako. This was the Daruma Cafe at 123 S. San Pedro Street, a popular Little Tokyo spot during the 1950s and 1960s. The Little Tokyo Historical Society has posted these photographs on behalf of Masako Kato.

Bill Shishima

Bill Shishima, a docent at the Japanese American National Museum, was interned at Heart Mountain during World War II. This collection gives a brief look into his life featuring pictures from his own collection and pictures gathered from the National Archives Digital Collection which highlight important events in his life.

Rising Stars Youth Leadership Program

The development of youth leadership is a common need expressed by almost every community organization. To address this need, the Nikkei Federation Youth Development Programs team developed the Rising Stars Youth Leadership Program. Rising Stars is a leadership development & cultural education program for high school students. 日本の学校で使用する教材作成のために、全米日系人博物館でボランティアガイドをしているヘンリー・S・ヤスダさんにインタビューをしました。第二次世界大戦開戦時には日本にいて戦後アメリカへ戻り、アメリカ軍として朝鮮戦争へ。日米の狭間で苦しんだ二世の想いを語ってくださりました。山口県人会の活動にも勢力的に取り組んでいるそうです。

日本の学校で使用する教材作成のために、ハワイ州ヒロのHawaii Japanese Centerでボランティアをしているシノブ・サトウさんにインタビューをしました。92歳まで地元放送局でアナウンサーとして活躍していただけあって豊富な昔語りをしてくださりました。日本語学校での「修身」の教えを今でも覚えていらっしゃいます。

日本の学校で使用する教材作成のために、ハワイ州ヒロのHawaii Japanese Centerでボランティアをしているトモエ・ニシさんにインタビューをしました。大好きだった日本語学校の思い出、真珠湾攻撃時の大砲の音、ハワイ100大隊から442部隊の一員として活躍したお兄さんの話、日本の敗戦を知って泣いてしまった時のことなどを語ってくださりました。

日本の学校で使用する教材作成のために、ハワイプランテーションビレッジでボランティアガイドをしているソウジロウ・タカムラさんにインタビューをしました。真珠湾攻撃時の体験、三兄弟が日米に分かれて従軍することになってしまった悲劇、戦後のGHQでの活動などについて語ってくださりました。プランテーションビレッジで日本からくる若者にたくさんのメッセージを伝えています。

Aoyama Tree Designation Ceremony, July 17, 2008

On July 17, 2008, the Aoyama Tree in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, was designated Historic Cultural Monument No. 920 by the City of Los Angeles. In attendance at the ceremony were the city dignitaries, Koyasan Buddhist Temple members, and Little Tokyo community activists who campaigned for official recognition for the tree. The Aoyama Tree is the first living object to receive this designation from the city. The tree, a Moreton Bay Fig, stands at the former site of the Koyasan Buddhist Temple. It was planted in 1920 and is named for Koyasan mission's founder, Rev. Shutai Aoyama.
