所属部隊の役割
A. As an ambulance company, we provided transportation in emergencies to the nearest medical treatment facility during times of conflicts and in peacetime, field duty ambulance coverage, special event site coverage, and training for ambulance coverage in times of conflicts and peacetime.
B. As a combat arms infantry battalion aid station unit, we provided first-line medical support and training for basic first aid and emergency evacuation procedures to line units.
C. The Division Surgeon's Office provided medical administrative support to all medical personnel assigned or attached to the Infantry Division, provided up-to-date training to assigned and attached medical personnel, and determined other medical issues. Also requisitoned and assigned medical personnel to various units of the Infantry Division.
My finance unit's assignement and responsibilities:
A. provides for sound fiscal accountability of public funds.
B. Manage and disburse payroll funds to all personnel assigned to the local installation site.
C. Ensure that all payroll funds for military and civilian employees are properly manmaged for various entitlements of pay that are authorized for disbursement.
D. Disburse funds as a commercial vendor (Accounts Payable) department for bills received of expenses incurred for all routine and special operational requirements.
E. Disburse for reimbursement of funds to personnel that incur traveling expenses while away from the permanent station and to personnel that travel on world wide reassignment.
F. Provide accounting services for expenditures, liablilities, and assets incurred. Prepares accounting reports as required by law and policy.

生活状況
During periods of tactical field duty and recent past conflicts, finance units were considered more stationary and located in rear echelon areas. Medium-sized tents were used for mess (meals), sleeping, working, and sometimes as shower units. Sometimes, the smaller 2-person pup tents were used as sleeping quarters. Other times, depending on the mission, finance units deployed to different areas and moved often when required during field exercise. Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) were issued and hot foods were prepared and catered by food service or unit personnel. Hot and cold water were provided in 55-gallon cans for shaving, brushing teeth, and 'cat baths.' Generators supplied electricity.
When assigned as an infantry unit medical specialist, we moved constantly from site to site. Used sleeping bags when tents were not available such as during special missions for example, and 'C' rations were issued and hot food rarely catered. 'Cat Baths' and personal hygiene was practiced whenever posible.
Once, on assignment with the 7th Infantry Division Surgeon, a joint sister service exercise was conducted on a Marine Corps base with Air Force logistical services already in place. Large tents were used for showers, medium tents for sleeping and mess (meals). We had hot meals three times a day. Generators provided electricity.

I was in Germany during the Desert Shield/Desert Storm-Persian Gulf Conflict when a unit recall alert was conducted by the commander to test the unit's ability to react to recall and actual movement. Several days later, the actual movement alert was conducted. The names of personnel were called and movement was conducted for Desert Storm.
All operational requirements were met for movement to Desert Storm and for rear echelon routines. Later when Iraq surrendered the unit returned safely. This was a very weird and tense moment in my career.
One of the humorous vivid memories I have is in Germany. I was a supervisor for a section that was transposing information from source documents to computer database for personnel and financial accounts. My section had personnel that were vigorous and energetic but could be bored quickly without work. I also had a subordinate who was a clown at heart. He was artistically gifted. He would do pranks to members of the section by drawing pictures relating an individual to television or current events that were humorous. For example, someone in the section had a facial expression similar to Mr. Peabody from the late 1960's era Bullwinkle cartoon. He would draw Mr. Peabody and place it in the person's desk drawer. When he opened his desk and looked at the drawing everybody else would start laughing, embarrassing the person. He would eventually join in the laughter and the resulting camaraderie improved morale.

The companionship of soldiers who worked together, making sure that each man was taken care of, the bonding of friendships that developed, and the feeling of security that was always there when needed. A lot of this was taken for granted. Also, especially the traveling - seeing, learning, and experiencing the different places, stateside and overseas.
個人的に軍隊経験から学んだ最も重要なこと
I gained the experience and maturity to develop solid work ethics, basic ethics, not necessarily relating to religion, but to do the right thing and to draw on my own strengths and to carry them over to the civilian world to attain my goals. I learned to make personal sacrifices to better myself intellectually, to be able to give my daughter the opportunity to go to college for a Bachelor's and even a graduate degree; this, in spite of the neighborhood I grew up in. I would like for my spouse who is a native of a foreign country, to remember the experiences that we had, our experiences, our goals, and our future together. I would like the rest of my family and friends to know that I had a great military and civilian career, and achieved personal and family goals that will benefit us for the rest of our lives.

I am a post Vietnam enlistee who retired from the US Army. I had other family members who served during and after World War II and the Vietnam conflict. My cousin from my father's family was drafted during the Vietnam conflict and returned after serving his term. Four of my uncles, one from father's family and two from my mother's family served in the US Army during World War II. My fourth uncle in mother's family by marriage served in the Air Force just after World War II. Two Uncles on my mother's family were assigned to Europe with the 442nd Regiment and another uncle was assigned to the WW II Military Intelligence Service (MIS) in Japan for translation and other duties working with POWs. My grandparents on my father's side immigrated to California and my grandparents on my mother's side immigrated to Washington State. Both sets of grandparents immigrated, circa the 1915 time frame. They were all in their thirties. During the second world war, the families were relocated from California and Washington to internment camps. After the war ended, both sets of my grandparents and their families settled in Denver, Colorado and have lived there ever since. My parents met and were married in Denver, where I was born and raised. I have an older sister and a younger brother. The neighborhood I grew up in was called 'Five Points' on the east side of Denver. I had attended Crofton Elementary, Morey Junior High, Manual High to my sophomore year, and finished schooling at John F. Kennedy High School, and entered active duty with the US Army after graduation. While in the US Army, I earned a Baccalaureate of Science Degree in Business and Management from the University of Maryland, and an Associates of Arts degree from Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri. I am married with one daughter who is attending college. She is planing on a Baccalureate degree and possibly, a Master's. My wife is a native of Korea, from Suweon, Republic of Korea. Although, I am familiar with the Japanese language, we generally speak Korean most of the time and the rest of the time in English. We usually have Korean dishes for meals and share a mix of American and Asian life styles.
