The Directory of Nikkei Collections is a database of institutions - universities, state agencies, museums, libraries, and community organizations - with collections related to the Nikkei experience.
The Directory, an important research effort of the Nikkei Legacy Project, attempts to gather and make accessible information on the Nikkei experience to an international audience via the Discover Nikkei website. As the first such resource of its kind, the Directory should be an invaluable tool to all those interested in learning more about the Nikkei and about the materials available in their communities and beyond.
Survey questionnaires were distributed to over 290 collecting institutions in the United States in 2004. Over 130 completed surveys were returned, some indicating no Nikkei-related holdings. These survey results have been recorded in the database, which is searchable by the physical location of the collection, the geographic areas documented, language, topical subject, repository name, and keywords.
The survey will be extended to Canada and other countries in 2005. If you know of an institution with Nikkei-related collections that is not currently included in the Directory, please contact us.
