Text:

Daniel Ken Inouye is the eldest of four children born to Hyataro and Kame Inouye, hard-working and humble parents whom he has always described as his "heroes." He was honored for his heroic service in WWII with the Congressional Medal of Honor, as well as twelve other medals and citations, and has spent his life supporting our armed forces and veterans who have served our country.

In 1949, Dan married Margaret Awamura. Their fifty-seven years of marriage sadly ended when Maggie passed away from cancer. In 2008, he married Irene Hirano, a highly respected Los Angeles community leader, who vigorously supports him in his work in Washington and Hawai‘i. In May 2010, Dan celebrated the birth of his first grandchild, Margaret Mary, or “Maggie” for short, born to his son, Kenny, and wife Jessica.

Throughout his more than half-century of public service, Senator Inouye has tirelessly championed the hopes and aspirations of Hawai‘i’s people. He has improved our economic and educational prospects, strengthened our infrastructure, and protected and restored our natural resources.

He has brought billions to Hawai‘i to increase access to community healthcare, to support our small businesses, strengthen our economy in diversified agriculture, technology and science, renewable energy, and large scale federal construction, with parallel educational investments to encourage student achievement in these areas. He has a special place in his heart for the indigenous people of Hawai‘i and has supported many programs for the betterment of Native Hawaiians.

Whether on the field of combat or on the floor of the U.S. Senate, Dan Inouye has fought against injustice and to preserve an equality of opportunity for all. Now, more than ever, we need his wisdom, commitment, clout and heart to represent Hawai‘i in Washington, D. C.
